KEVIN LORD MEMORIAL

Kevin Lord Memorial / NTBHL Fundraiser
Background to the Event

Kevin Lord was involved in the BBHL during its very first years. He competed at all Provincial Championships representing the BBHL. If  we ever had an ambassador….it was Kevin Lord. He was the first player from our organization, at the age of 16 who was asked to play at the Junior National Championships, the first of 4 such events which took him to places such as Grand Falls, NFLD, Charlottetown, PEI and Edmonton, Alberta.  As an organization we could not have been prouder. Kevin along with Robert Crumbie were selected from our organization to play for the U20 Junior Team Canada in 2004 with the event taking place in Martin, Slovakia. The organization rallied around with an amazing fundraiser and we were able to send these players off…truly exciting times. It was the BBHL’s introduction for our players representing Canada and helped pave the path for many others. Kevin was the youngest player on the team and was eligible to return for the 2006 event in Italy and was appointed captain before his illness became too serious.

Kevin was stricken with brain cancer in January 2005, and on April 29, 2006 he lost his courageous battle. It was a loss to his family, friends, teammates and truly an entire community. Between the times Kevin discovered he had cancer until the day he passed away, he continued to inspire young & older athletes and all those around him. During this time he competed and lead the first BBHL Men’s team to the Nationals in Calgary, he coached in the minor league, he refereed in the minors and women’s league…he was someone that everyone knew, admired and loved. He never once complained about his situation, his focus was always on others.

What we have described of his achievements in ball hockey pale in comparison to his accomplishments as a role model, mentor and friend to many, with the list of attributes that could go on and on.

This is to give you the backdrop on the KLMF (Kevin Lord Memorial Fundraiser) and the
person who it is in memory of
.

Al Lord, Kevin’s father, has been a loyal supporter and friend to the BBHL and to so many people in the organization. Al has worked diligently over the last 5 years to put together the Kevin Lord Memorial Fundraiser in conjunction with the BBHL so that Kevin’s memory is honoured, and also to support the BBHL with generous donations each year that help players travel to the National or World Championships. Without his commitment and work, many players wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience the travel and competition at such elite events . We have been able, largely through Al’s commitment and efforts to send players to Slovakia, Czech Republic, Italy and Austria. His donations have also helped offset costs for BBHL teams while travelling to Halifax, Edmonton and Saskatoon. We are grateful for Al’s commitment and tireless work. To date his fundraising efforts have largely contributed to sending 16 players to events in Europe while raising over $40,000 during his 5 fundraisers.
